Ultra High End PC Manufacturer Vadim Calls it a Day

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

In a sad day for those of us who love to see computing pushed to its bleeding edge, high-end PC specialist Vadim has ceased trading. The global credit crunch and reluctant investors have been cited as the cause.

“It is with great regret that I must inform you that V-Solutions LTD, the official company behind Vadim Computers, as from today, 07/07/08 has gone into voluntary liquidation. One of the reasons for this sudden action is the credit crunch that unfortunately hit the electronics and PC hardware industry hard..”

We wish the owners and employees at Vadim all the best in their future projects

Slow start for G200

Monday, July 7th, 2008

A source from www.overclockers.co.uk – one of the UK’s largest hardware resellers - has revealed to Total PC Gaming that sales of nVIDIA’s new 280 and 260 GTX cards are much slower than normally expected for a new GeForce release. The Radeon 4800 series is being cited as the cause for this, as ATi’s latest cards perform similarly but are significantly cheaper. We will be looking at both of manufacturer’s latest and greatest offerings in our supertest the next issue which will be on sale 7th August.

Full Line up of MSI P45 Motherboards now available

Monday, June 30th, 2008

MSI now has a full range of Intel P45 chipset motherboards available for sale, ranging from affordable mainstream solutions to the latest Crossfire-ready Platinum and Diamond series products designed for overclockers and enthusiasts. Whilst the P45 isn’t a huge upgrade over existing chipsets, if the pre-release samples we have looked at thus far are anything to go by, they should be capable of very high FSB clock speeds and run considerably cooler than previous offerings.

Novint gets its Valve turned; Aperture Science to upgrade Falcon

Friday, June 27th, 2008

The Novint Falcon is a novel user interface that functions as a mouse, but with the added bonus of 3D functionality and force feedback. Using three motorized arms connected to a ball held in player’s hands, the Falcon has been fighting players for the last year in the States, picking up gusto as a viable gaming peripheral. Things are picking up steam too, since Valve will now support the Falcon with a healthy selection of its games, including The Orange Box, Counter-Strike: Source, the Half-Life 2 series, Team Fortress 2, Portal and Left 4 Dead.

It must be because of how similar the Falcon’s look to something Aperture Science would make. The resemblance is uncanny…perhaps it was fate.

Valve’s ‘head paunch-o’ Gabe Newell said, “Recently we’ve seen how new interfaces have changed gaming. The Falcon adds a new level of interaction for PC gaming, adding compelling force feedback while maintaining controls as accurate as a mouse, and now the millions of Steam gamers will have the chance to play, feeling this new type of experience.”

ATi HD 4850 set to dominate the mainstream graphics market

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Last week saw the release of the monolithic GeForce GTX 280, which at well over £400 will only be an option for the richest of PC gamers. Fortunately, benchmark numbers for ATi’s latest card have also started trickling onto the internet, and it’s very good news for mainstream PC buyers. Performance generally seems to be higher than the already-speedy GeForce 9800 GTX, but as the new card is available from just £135, it’s currently a lot cheaper. Performance has also been greatly improved in games such as Crysis where nVIDIA previously had a stranglehold.

NVIDIA’s latest graphics card, the GTX 280, goes on sale today. The GTX 280 is, to date, the fastest consumer card from NVIDIA, outperforming its current top-end model the 9800 GX2. Its got a 602MHz core clock, 1GB of GDDR3 memory at 2.2GHz and 1296MHz shader clock. A quick search of various online stores shows prices starting at £429 and going up to over £500 for factory-overclocked models. If that’s a little too rich for you, the GTX 260 will be available from 26th June. It has a slower core, memory and shader clock speeds and 896MB RAM instead of 1GB, but can be found for around £300. There are reviews at AnandTech, Tom’s Hardware, Ubergizmo and many other sites, and we’ll be taking a close look at the card in issue 9, on sale 10th July.

PCs For Dummies (again)

amd.jpg
CPU manufacturer AMD has announced it’s launching a new standardised PC system that’s playable ’straight out of the box’. It’s called AMD GAME!, is Vista-based with a Phenom processor and ATi graphics - check the full specifications here. It’s being marketed at a console-esque breed of PC gamers who don’t want to have to know what’s going on inside the box, with AMD intending to update the specifications every six months to keep in step with the industry. Currently it’s only available from Canada and US, but if its target market overcomes their confusion over the difference between a 2008 and 2009 Ultra system, we could be seeing them stocked over here.
